How to Layer Necklaces Like a Pro

Raise your hand if you love layering pieces of jewelry to up-level a classic outfit combo (my hand is raised, in case you were wondering). Jewelry is hands down the best way to make an outfit of existing pieces in your closet feel fresh and new, and today I want to share tips for how you can layer bold chain necklaces like a pro. Now I will admit that in the past, I felt that layering pieces of jewelry was intimidating, and I definitely had some outfit failures, but after a few years of trial-and-error I learned that what works best for me is keeping it simple and not trying to hard! My top two learnings are that layering necklaces of varying lengths is key to ensure that each piece can be seen and appreciated as part of whole set, and to not be afraid to mix metals or gemstones. Below are my steps to creating a set of layered bold chain necklaces that is unique to your personal style:

1) Start with a short chain, choker, or delicate collar necklace, something that sits right on your collarbone. I chose a shorter rose gold figaro chain to start my layered look.

2) Second, add a mid-length charm or pendant that is meaningful to you. I added an initial pendant in my first look, but there are so many great options to show your personal style.

3) Third, add a long chain, lariat, or pendant to further personalize your look. My long layer is a tag pendant with my birthstone (citrine for November).

I personally think three necklaces is my sweet spot, but you could keep going with your layered look or pull back to two pieces to maintain simplicity. It's all up to you! Please keep reading for more photos, outfit links, and more of my picks for jewelry pieces that I think would look fabulous layered together this fall and beyond.

This first outfit features a trio of layered necklaces with one short chain, one medium pendant, and one long chain pendant in a mixture of gold and rose gold. As I mentioned above, I think three necklaces is the sweet spot for me and I love how this layering trio up-levels an otherwise simple wrap sweater and jeans outfit combination. I added some fancy accessories with my Gucci belt, Louboutin heels, and YSL bag, but the neutral tones ensure that these necklaces are the star of the show. I love the different lengths of these necklaces, how they each look fabulous on their own but then look even better together.

This second outfit has a duo of layered necklaces, which I think complement this seersucker ruffle top quite well. The top already stands out as a statement piece, as do my bright yellow braided sandals, so dialing my layered jewelry back a notch made sense for overall balance. For this particular outfit, I went with one short chain and one long pendant necklace. Layering necklaces is an art, not a science, and you can and should do whatever feels right for you. I just love that there are so many gorgeous options, and I continue to be inspired to try something new.

Sharing more options below for necklaces that can be layered or worn on their own. Be sure to scroll through to see all of my picks, priced for a range of budgets and with a several great options under $60:
