Travel Log: Napa Valley Wine Tasting

Saturday morning, we grabbed coffee at Philz and then headed out of SF via the 101 over the Golden Gate bridge.  We had to stop and take a couple of photos on the way out of the city.

After a quick photo stop, we headed out to Napa.  Our first stop was Artesa Winery off of Old Sonoma Road.  Owned by a Spanish family, Artesa's name comes from the Catalon word form "handcrafted."  They are known for their chardonney, pinot noir, merlot, and cabernet, and their unique structure was built into the hillside covered with grass to blend into the surrounding landscape.  Around the winery are a series of pools and fountains, and there is an expansive deck off the tasting room with gorgeous views of the surrounding area.  I could have sat out on the deck here all day!  Since it was 85 degrees in Napa (compared to 65 degrees in SF), I ditched my J Crew safari jacket and wedge boots, and slipped on my Nine West Clarence white flats.

The next stop was Trefethen Family Vineyards off of the St. Helena Highway.  Their building was undergoing construction on the exterior, so we took a couple of pics in the vineyard on the way out instead.  Trefethen had some amazing cabernets - we tasted both a 2007 and a 2008 and both were memorable.  You can't quite tell from this photo, but I changed into shorts at this point...it was getting hot!

Our third winery of the afternoon was Round Pond in Rutherford.  I hold a membership to this winery, and it was a wonderful treat to be able to visit for one of their food and wine pairings.  Round Pond has a fantastic outdoor patio overlooking their vineyard, and it was a wonderful way to wrap up our afternoon wine tasting.

Round Pond's sun-filled outdoor patio.

Food and wine pairing:  2011 Estate Sauvignon Blanc paired with a radish, cucumber, and apple with cheese on toast, 2009 Estate Syrah paired with a deep-fried olive and salami, and 2009 Estate Cabernet paired with a crepe filled with beef and a delicious tomato sauce.  I wish I had saved the menu so that I could describe the food exactly as they did.  They all were tasty and paired perfectly with their respective wines!

Another photo of the tasty bites.

One last goofy shot before we left Round Pond and headed back to the hotel to change for dinner.

Saturday night, we took a recommendation from our friends at Round Pond and dined at The Girl and the Fig in Sonoma.  Their motto is "country food with a french passion," and it was wonderful!  For dinner, I chose to pair my Equipment blouse with a polka dotted skirt and heels for a simple and elegant outfit.  Here I am forcing my sweetheart to take a couple of quick pics before we ran back out the door... =)
