Summer Style: Slip Dresses Styled Two Ways

Do you have those moments where you look at your closet, knowing full well you have plenty of clothes, but nothing you want to wear? I've been having that feeling about my collection of dresses now that summer is here, a feeling that I needed to try something new. Slip dresses have been on my radar since last spring, they are definitely having a moment and have evolved far past the 1990's babydoll tee and slip dress combo era. After seeing many bloggers and friends wearing gorgeous slip dresses and looking effortlessly chic this season, I decided that I needed to jump on that train. Today I am sharing two new slip dresses recently added to my closet, styled two different ways to show their versatility. Please continue reading to see lots of photos, descriptions and size/fit information, outfit links, and more of my picks for slip dresses to inspire your own effortlessly chic summer look.

This first look could be perfect for a cocktail wedding or date night. Technically this slip dress style was designed to be a bridesmaid dress option for the BHLDN line, but I will happily argue that a black slip dress in a classic, flattering shape like this one can be worn for so many more occasions and could easily be part of a capsule wardrobe. I appreciate the weight of the material on this particular dress, some slip dresses are unlined and see-through, this one is not. There are some negative reviews online about the fit and material, but I followed the size chart, ordered a size 4 (I didn't want it to be tight), and here you can see it hugs all the right places and I am very happy with the fit. The cowl neck is very flattering, and I think if it doesn't seem like it will stay in place a bit of fashion tape should do the trick. The only thing I may do is take a few inches off the length so it fits more like a midi than a maxi dress. For this dressed up look, I added these Louboutin Rosalie slingback sandals (I am wearing a size 39, my usual), my Chanel quilted caviar flap bag with the chain tucked inside so it's more like a box clutch, and simple jewelry to let the dress really be the statement piece.

For this second look, I decided to style a more casual daytime option with this sweet floral slip dress. When I was shopping for slip dresses, I could not decide between classic black and a floral print, so I decided to get both. This second dress is made of a thinner material than the first dress (the price reflects), which is always something to consider, but using similar logic as the first dress I followed the size chart and ordered a size 4 to have a looser fit and less chance of a wardrobe malfunction. I am loving the blue floral print that will transition nicely into fall, and while you cannot see it in these photos the back has an adjustable tie that enables a perfect fit. A denim jacket, neutral ankle strap sandals, a ruched clutch, and simple jewelry round out this summer outfit that can take you from day to night.

I collected even more lovely slip dress options in a variety of colors and prints for you to check out below, be sure to scroll through to see everything:
